Paulo Nalin holds a law degree from the Federal University of Paraná (1991), a master's degree in Private Law from the Federal University of Paraná (1996), and a PhD in Social Relations Law, also from the Federal University of Paraná (2000). He completed his postdoctoral studies in International Contracts in Switzerland, at the Juristische Fakultät - Universität Basel (University of Basel Law School, 2014), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ingeborg Schwenzer. Currently, Nalin is an Associate Professor of Civil Law at his alma matter (undergraduate and graduate levels). He was a Full Professor of Civil Law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (2003-2004). He is a professor in the L.L.M. program at the Swiss International Law School (SILS). An attorney and an arbitrator, Nalin has extensive experience in the field of Law, with an emphasis in Civil Law, mainly working on the following topics: obligations, domestic and international contracts, civil liability, corporate law, civil constitutional law, fundamental rights, and arbitration.

Highlights

Paulo Nalin conducted research at Harvard Law School for his master's dissertation, titled Breach of Contract and Non-Pecuniary Damage, published in Brazil and supervised by Justice Luiz Edson Fachin (Minister of Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court), at UFPR. For his doctorate, he conducted research and attended the Camerino Law School (Camerino, Italy), to develop the thesis The Post-Modern Concept of Contract, which was defended at UFPR in both Portuguese and Italian, under the co-supervision of Justice Luiz Edson Fachin and Professor Vito Rizzo. The thesis was published in Brazil as well as in Europe. On assuming the chair of the Civil Law department at PUC-PR, he defended the thesis Good Faith as an Element of the Existence of a Legal Transaction. His PhD studies in International Contracts were completed in Switzerland, at the University of Basel (UNIBASEL), under the supervision of Prof. Ingeborg Schwenzer, which led to the publication of the book The International Buying and Selling of Goods – The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Buying and Selling of Goods (CISG), in partnership with Dr. Renata Carlo Steiner.

Paulo Nalin also has an extensive number of domestic and international publications, in the form of legal articles, chapters in legal anthologies, and coordination of academic works. Notable books include International Buying and Selling of Goods, The New Frontiers of Contract Law, and Post-Constitutionalization of Civil Law.
